Remote viewing lags badly compared with the local view

If local viewing is smooth and remote viewing stutters, the bottleneck is upstream bandwidth and link quality, not camera performance.

  • Use the sub stream: main streams commonly run above 4 Mbps. Remote viewing should default to the sub stream, typically 512 Kbps to 1 Mbps, switching to the main stream only when detail is needed.
  • Do the upload maths: domestic lines often offer only 20 to 50 Mbps upstream. Several simultaneous remote sessions compete for it, so cap concurrency or reduce bitrate.
  • Enable smart encoding: H.265+ style encoding varies bitrate with scene activity, cutting bandwidth noticeably with little visible quality loss.
  • Check the network path: cross-carrier and cross-border links add latency and packet loss. Prefer the nearest cloud node.
  • Client performance: decoding multiple HD streams is demanding on a phone. Reduce the number of simultaneous views or the preview resolution.

Where the main stream is genuinely required remotely, deploy a local media forwarding service so the site pushes a single sub stream to the cloud.
