When a PTZ head will not move, or presets go missing, troubleshoot from software down to hardware.

1. Protocol and address: PTZ control depends on a matching protocol, address and baud rate. For IP domes, confirm control is set to ONVIF or the vendor protocol and that the address matches the channel.
2. Power headroom: current spikes when a dome starts moving. An undersized supply presents as 'fine when still, reboots when it turns', so recalculate the power budget.
3. Lost presets: usually the configuration was never written before a power cut, or a firmware fault cleared it. Re-calibrate the presets, confirm they are stored on the device, and replace the backup cell if needed.
4. Mechanical obstruction: ice inside the housing, trapped debris or a forced override of the pan limit will all stop rotation. Inspect the mechanism on site.
5. Motors and gearing: frequent high-duty panning accelerates gear wear, which shows as a direction that no longer moves, often with unusual noise. That is a hardware repair.

Configure patrol patterns and auto-return on domes so the mechanism does not sit in one position long enough to suffer uneven lubrication.
