How do I choose between home and commercial cameras?

The difference between home and commercial surveillance is not price but design intent. Consumer products optimise for fast, simple setup; commercial systems optimise for long-term stability, central management and traceability.

  • Stability: commercial deployments typically run 24/7 for three to five years, which demands industrial-grade components and stricter thermal and surge design. Home use is intermittent viewing, which consumer hardware handles comfortably.
  • Storage: homes often use an SD card plus a little cloud storage. Commercial sites need centralised recording on an NVR with a defined retention period — commonly 30 to 90 days — and drive redundancy is the safer choice.
  • Management and permissions: commercial systems need tiered accounts and operation logs for accountability and audit. Home systems usually just share access within a household.
  • Expansion and integration: commercial projects later add access control, alarm panels, video walls and platforms, so confirm support for ONVIF, GB/T 28181 and similar standards at purchase time.

A useful rule of thumb: beyond eight channels, with multiple administrators, or where footage might be used as evidence, design to commercial standards. The extra hardware cost up front is far lower than reworking later.
